Hi friend. It’s been a little bit since I’ve posted to my blog. (You can read some of my First 5 teachings and recently published works on my website.) This fall season has been jam packed with exciting opportunities, refreshing social gatherings, and impactful events. I’ve learned to make the most of tedious commutes and to be fully present, even when my mind wants to wander into what’s next.
And the funny thing? Towards the end of the summer, God put it on my heart to slow down. I made a weekly schedule for myself, fully convinced I wouldn’t have too much on my plate in this season. While all I took on was manageable, it was busier than I expected. I can handle that. But God revealed to me something bigger and more important: it’s not just about healthy rhythms in my routines, but knowing when to set limits when needed.
I’m one to push through the pain and get the job done. But my health has required me to listen to my body more fully and slow down when I need to. I choose not to get up or show up when I’m going through a pain flare up. Even if I have a full day ahead, I prioritize taking it easy. I’ve become compassionate towards myself when I’m not feeling my best. I’ve gratefully and humbly received God’s grace when I have to cancel or postpone my plans.
And you know what I’ve come to know – and experience – in this season?
God’s presence is powerful…even still.
In moments of pain, God was with me. He comforted me. He never left me. I dove deep into His Word and sat in His presence. No distractions.
In group settings, God’s goodness overflowed. I assisted in teaching a course at my church. The long nights were so life-giving as we went in-depth into God’s Word. The outcome – seeing participants experience healing and freedom – was nothing but praise-worthy. I’d leave each session filled with what God did in this larger group setting.
And, just the same, gathering with a friend or small group revealed God’s care about – and care for – the one. As I mentored one girl, I championed her wins in learning Scripture and living out the truth of the gospel. Even where I served and sat at the women’s conference was ordained by God! He knew the girl who would sit next to me who longed for a friend to teach her Scripture and come alongside her in this season. Little did either of us know just how much our stories parallel at points. And when I showed up for one friend at a seemingly random time, it happened to be the very minute she needed someone.
And when I needed clarity, prayer, or perspective, my friends were the same encouragement and support to me. Time after time, God planted the right person, the right verse, and the right words exactly where they were needed most.
In this recent season of busyness, I adopted a “slow down” mentality, not just a rhythm in my schedule. I set boundaries, so I can make the most of what’s in front of me. I fully trust God’s leading with my commitments, and I trust that His timing is no accident. I know He has strategically placed me where I am, when I’m alone or with others, to grow in my faith and to draw others closer to Him. I trust Him to take care of my health and to do the work, even when I need to recover.
Friend, no matter where you find yourself, or amongst how many people you are, God is with you. You can trust His leading. He has orchestrated the details of your days and His plan for you is good. Even when it’s hard, look for His hand in the little things.
Hang on to these verses today:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way;” - Psalm 37:23 (ESV)
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” - Colossians 1:16-17 (ESV)
What I’m Reading
With my busy commutes, I’ve enjoyed author-narrated audiobooks (which is rare – I don’t learn or retain the most by listening, but reading and writing). And before bed, I stick to some traditional reading to encourage my heart. Add me on GoodReads to see what books I’d recommend, and to share your top picks with me. (If you’ve completed my Bible study Steadfast, I’d love if you left a nice review and mark it as read!) Click here to see my author page.
